Representation within design.

While working for MIAD, I was tasked with creating and designing the theme for an event called MIAD Defines 2019. MIAD Defines is an event where seniors get to show off their thesis projects that they’ve been working on all year. And freshmen, sophomores and juniors get to ask questions and learn more about the seniors’ process. The theme for this year was ‘representation’ and how they interpreted this idea within their designs/artwork.

Creating the style.

The project was a fairly straightforward one. The school needed a theme and style to help market this event to both the school and the surrounding the neighborhood. Something fits the tone and theme of representation, simple, readable style, yet colorful to follow the school’s bright color palette. In my mind, I thought the best way to hand these two elements was with a colorful pattern work that could fade in negative space where the simplistic and bold typefaces could pop with color. But the question was what kind of pattern would work?

A key role was having people or positions that represented a certain group/demographic. So I thought of this triangle pattern where different colored patterns fit into this larger structure of triangles forming a nice blend of colors. Also, I chose the triangles because it’s the strongest shape in nature.

The bulk of the deliverables were 5 different parts. There is a banner (shown above), something that was used as an online banner and as a real large banner that would be hung in the main hallway at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Room posters, that showed which rooms had different events going on during MIAD Defines. A poster schedule, showing all the times. Finally a 3-fold brochure that shows the all the previously said information. And finally, the event was sponsored by 3 companies. Sysco, Colectivo Coffee, and DigiCOPY.
