Showing individuality through a lack of color
Throughout the history of fashion design, color has been used as a way to show expression and individuality. The use of black through all facets of fashion are especially interesting. In some areas of fashion, black is used as an expression of rebellion, being against the grain, like goth clothing or any hard rock. When it comes to funerals, black is a sign of death, mourning, sadness. But ironically, in high fashion, black is sleek, elegant, and intelligent.
In terms of high fashion, this treatment of black being elegant as opposed to the former comes from the minimalist aspect that the color black is accompanied with. I wanted to explore these aspects of minimalism of all black clothing from a branding perspective. What would it look like? What mood does it give off? How it can it still show individuality while being both minimalistic and only using the color black.
I wanted to create a brand that played off the all black look while still being minimalistic. Something more in tune with the high fashion perception of black. But as I was thinking of high fashion I got stuck in this loop of minimalist black fashion being elegant and formal. I wanted something that did still reach a rebellious spirit but still showed a higher form of fashion. I arrived at a new wave of fashion called ‘techwear.’ Techwear was born from mashing modern fashion and outdoor utility. It’s a style that while heavily relies on aesthetic value, mainly focuses on function. To display this brand, I created a look to emulate what this brand would actually look like.
void : noun
1a: opening, gap
b : empty space : emptiness, vacuum
2: the quality or state of being without something : lack, absence
Most of the lookbook follows this format, where it shows the labels and tags on the products. I thought what better way to show an imaginary clothing brand without actually showing you the clothing. It seems counterintuitive, but this lookbook is more so about the brand than it is the actual clothing.
